The East Clare & Lough Derg Way

The East Clare WayThis tour starts in east Co. Clare, about 1 hour from Shannon airport. It follows country roads, forest tracks, bog roads with some open hill-walking. The area is rich with archaeological remains from the Bronze & Iron Ages, 4000 B.C. but also with feudal times of the Middle Ages, castles, tower houses, old churches and abbeys.

A free day in Killaloe gives the opportunity to enjoy a lake cruise, a relaxing day on the edge of Ireland's great waterway, the River Shannon. You will enjoy hospitality, small villages, traditional music and the relaxing pace of country life in Ireland.

Itinerary:

Day 1

Arrival to Shannon. Taxi transfer (15km) north to the town of Quin (not included), where you spend your first night. Quin is a lovely village to explore with a 13th century Gothic church and 15th century Fransiscan friary.

 
Day 2

Quin to O'Callaghan's Mills - Through an area rich in megalithic remains, woodland trails, Cullaunyheedy Bird Sanctuary and a short detour to visit Craggaunowen Bronze Age Settlement. Overnight Broadford (transfer included).

O'Callaghan's Mills to Broadford - Minor country roads, pass Teerovannan 17th century castle, a climb to 250m for superb views of the Slieve Bernagh mountains and through forestry paths to descend to Broadford. Overnight Broadford

Day 4

Broadford to Killaloe - Walking along Sarsfield's Ride where 600 Irish soldiers rode in 1690 to ambush guns being delivered to King William in Limerick. Follow The Glen, an ancient cattle route. Excellent views of Moylussa, the highest mountain in Co. Clare.  Overnight Killaloe

Day 5

Free Day in Killaloe or Feenlea Mountain Circuit - Enjoy this lovely town, a lake cruise to Holy island with a 7th century round tower. 

Feenlea Circuit climbs to 300m on forest tracks and old bog roads descending through Crag Wood for a lakeside walk to Killaloe. Overnight Killaloe

Day 6

Killaloe to Garrykennedy - Over the Arra Mountains to the highest point on the route at 462m, pristine blanket bog and superb views descending to a lakeside walk to Garrykennedy, famous for traditional music. Overnight Garrykennedy.

Garrykennedy to Dromineer  - Minor roads, Youghal woods, an easy low-level walk to the lakeside village of Dromineer.

Depart - Public bus transfer to Limerick and to Shannon. (not included).
