The Western Mayo Walk

The West Mayo WalkWestern Mayo - please note this walk is not one of Ireland's Waymarked Ways but is a route easily followed with our track notes and maps. It is a wonderful, wild, part of Ireland, unexplored, and off most of the conventional tourist routes. Dramatic cliffs, islands, light and the beauty of the Atlantic. It is waiting for you.

The route follows old bog roads, mountain trails and country roads. From Achill to Ballycroy on Day 6 is mostly minor roads with some dune and beach walking. Your accommodations are all in small traditional villages, or towns.

 

 

Itinerary:

Day 1 Arrival in Knock or Shannon. Bus transfer to Newport, Co. Mayo (not included). Overnight in this pretty village near the Mayo coast.
Day 2

Newport to Mallranny - Walk on the foothills of the western Nephin Beg range, overlooking the beautiful Clew Bay and its unique series of drumlin islands. Mallranny village overlooks beaches and a fishing pier.

Day 3

Mallranny to Achill Sound - Transfer onto Achill Island to Bellacragher Bay; walk through forest and bog land dotted with paternoster lakes. Walk into Achill Sound.

Day 4

Dooega to Menawn Cliffs to Achill Sound - A fabulous day of cliff tops and wild Atlantic seas! Walk to 403m for views over Achill, Clew Bay and north to Belmullet peninsula. Overnight Achill Sound.

Day 5

Via Doogort and Slievemore desrted famine village to Dooagh, at the western end of Achill Island. Overnight Achill Sound.

Day 6

Castlehill to Ballycroy - Transfer to Castlehill for a low-level shoreline walk looking out to Annagh Island, Inishbiggle and Blacksod Bay. Overnight Ballycroy.

Day 7

Ballycroy to Bangor - Back to the hills - follow the Bangor Trail through the Nephin Mountains to Bangor.

Day 8 Departure Bangor by bus transfer (not included).
