Athlone Town

Athlone is an historic town, a major crossing point on the River Shannon on the southern entrance to Lough Ree. Located 75 miles west of Dublin and 60 miles east of Galway, Athlone is generally considered to be the exact centre of Ireland.

The golf courses at Athlone, Glasson, Esker Hills, Tullamore, Mullingar and Portumna are within easy reach, while East Clare, Slieve Russell, The Heritage, Headfort, the K-Club and Carton House are slightly further.

Athlone is in County Westmeath and some sample accommodation providers can be viewed at our Westmeath golf accommodation page.

Tullamore Town

Tullamore is the principal town of County Offaly in the heart of the Irish midlands. Located approximately 25 miles southeast of Athlone, Tullamore is also an ideal location for midland golf tours and is a popular choice for golfers travelling from Dublin.

Both Tullamore and Esker Hills Golf Clubs are within easy travelling distance, and The Heritage, Portumna, Birr and East Clare, as well as Athlone, Glasson and Mullingar are within one hours drive. Tullamore is also an ideal accommodation choice for your Ryder Cup 2006 travel plans, the K-Club is just over one hour away.

Non-Golf Travel Attractions

in common with the rest of Ireland, midland Ireland is rich in history and culture. On the banks of the Shannon between Athlone and Portumna is the famous abbey at Clonmacnoise. Athlone itself was the site of a major siege during the Jacobean wars of the late 17th century and Athlone Castle has an excellent interpretative centre.

The River Shannon provides a wide range of water-based activity with Portumna and Athlone being major centres for river cruising. Fishing is available everywhere both from the shore on the many lakes and streams and by boat on Lough Ree.

There are fine period houses and gardens at Birr and Mullingar. Tullamore is famous for its pot-still whiskey (Tullamore Dew), as is Kilbeggan on the main Athlone-Dublin road. Kilbeggan also has a number of evening horse racing mettings during the summer months.
