Sligo Town

Sligo Town is 135 miles west-north-west of Dublin and 135 miles north of Shannon airport. The best known links in the northwest of Ireland is proabably County Sligo Golf Club at Rosses Point. The terrific golf links at Murvagh (Donegal Golf Club), the links at Enniscrone (see our western golf course directory) and the holiday links at Strandhill are all with easy reach of Sligo.

North of Sligo is Yeats Country, an area dominated by the magnificent Ben Bulben mountain and made famous by the Nobel poet. The Sligo coastline has some magnificent beaches and Lisadell House is one of Ireland's most famous period residences that is now owned and operated as a visitor centre by the State.

Donegal Town

Travelling north from Sligo you arrive to County Donegal, a large county occupying the northwest corner of Ireland. The land in Donegal is wild and rugged, scenery uniwue in Ireland with stunning Atlatic views all along the west and north coast.

Donegal Town is in the southern end of County Donegal. It is an historic and quaint town and it is worth spending a night or two here. The golf links at Murvagh is simply great.

A golf travel route would normally take a northerly track to the many fine links courses on the north coast of Donegal, though a tourist route would probably bear to the west coast and the ancient site of Glencolumkille and the traditional Irish villages of Glenties, Bunbeg and the wild shoreline known as Bloody Foreland.

Letterkenny Town

Letterkenny is one of Ireland's fastest growing towns and for golf travellers serves as a gateway to the magnificent links courses on the north coast of Donegal. The courses at Ballyliffin (36) , Portsalon and Rosapenna (36) are of top quality and there is a lovely seaside golf links at Dunfanaghy. Dunfanaghy village is a popular seaside accommodation base.

Coleraine

60 miles west-north-west of Belfast is the large Northern town of Coleraine on the mouth of the River Bann. Almost on the coast, Coleraine is a good urban base for golf travel to the triumverate of courses at Castlerock, Portstewart and the world famous Royal Portrush (36).

Bushmills

Just to the northwest of Coleraine is the pictureque village of Bushmills, globally famous for its whiskey. Bushmills is the traditional golf accommodation base for travel itineraries including the three Causeway courses. This section of the Irish coast is known as the Causeway Coast because of the unique sandstone rock formation - the Giants Causeway.

Non-Golf Travel Attractions

Besides magnificent scenery and great golf, the northwest of Ireland offers plenty of other activities and attractions.

In Sligo, Drumcliff Cemetery (where "Yeats is laid") and Lisadell House are the main attractions. Donegal Town is a wonderful place to explore and the ancient Christian moastery and relics at Glencolumkille are worth visiting. Glenveagh House and Gardens (a National Park) are also worth a visit.
