The Western Way

The Western Way long-distance walking route runs through both counties Galway (Connemara) and Mayo, in the west of Ireland. The route covers 200km (125 miles) and it follows old tracks, mountain trails and green roads. You will cross the Mám Ean Pass through the Maamturk mountains, a site of pilgrimage and prayer.

Your tour starts outside Oughterard, Co. Galway on the shores of Lough Corrib and finishes at Westport in Co. Mayo. This area is famous for its scenic landscapes, bare mountains and picturesque lakes.

There are two remote overnight locations where you can enjoy the experience of country life in the west with your hosts.

The Western Way is mostly well signposted with wooden or plastic yellow markers and road signs. You should have no difficulty following this route with our track notes.

Itinerary:

Day 1	Arrival in Sannon or Galway. Transfer to Oughterard in Connemara
Day 2	Walk Oughterard to Maam valley past the shores of Lough Corrib and Leckavrea Mountain	14km
Day 3	Maam to Lough Inagh through the Mam Ean Pass, one of Ireland's pilgrim's routes	15km
Day 4	Free day at Lough Inagh. Chance to explore the magnificent Twelve Bens mountains on foot
Day 5	Lough Inagh to Leenane via the old green road with magnificent views over Killary Harbour.	14km
Day 6	Leenane to Drummin. Wild boglands and forests in the hinterland of County Mayo.	23km
Day 7	Drummin to Westport. Walk in the shadow of Ireland's Holy mountain; Croagh Patrick. Westport has many colourful shops and pubs.	24km
Day 8	Departure from Westport, by bus or train
